Chrysler . How do I Replace the Wheel Studs on a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire?Wheel studs provide the lug nuts a solid thread to grip, firmly holding the wheel in place. When the studs begin to wear out, the threads no longer perform to their full potential. Replacing studs with new ones is a quick and easy way to ensure the safety of your Sunfire. Wheel stud size varies from one vehicle to the next, so make sure you only purchase studs specifically made for the 1999 Pontiac Sunfire. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Wheel chocks Socket wrench Tire iron Hammer Open-ended wheel nutSuggest EditsItem AddWhy is it necessary?Done Step by Step : 1 Lift the wheel in need of service using a floor jack. Place the jack under the frame, as close to the wheel as possible. Make sure the opposite wheels are blocked off using chocks before lifting. Jack until the wheel is entirely off the ground. 2 Remove the four lug nuts holding the wheel in place using a socket wrench or the car's tire iron. Take the wheel off the studs and set it aside. Locate the damaged stud and drive it out the back of the hub by taping the end with a hammer. When the stud is completely out, insert the new one from behind and push it forward as far as you can. 3 Place an open-ended wheel nut on the stud and turn it until it begins pulling the stud head through the hole. If the nut doesn't reach the hub before running out of room, add washers to the stud and try again. Tighten the lug nut until the stud is fully inserted in the hole. Save the lug nut for future use when replacing wheel studs. Do not use it to hold the wheel on. 4 Put the wheel back on and fully tighten the lug nuts. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Check the lug nuts again after driving several miles to make sure they are still tight. The nut on the newly replaced stud may be a little loose as it fully seats in the hub during the first few miles of driving.
